FC PCB assembly Process

The PCB assembly process is a sequential process. In the process, each step has its own importance. The steps of the PCB assembly process are:

Step 1: Component selection

At FC, the first step in the PCBA assembly process is to select the electronic components based on the schematic and Bill of Materials (BOM). The BOM provides a detailed list of components required for the specific design. It includes information such as part numbers, quantities, and reference designators. The assembly team reviews the BOM and ensures that all the necessary components are available for the assembly process. The components can be surface mount technology (SMT) or through-hole (TH) components, depending on how they are mounted on the board.

Step 2: Solder paste

Next, a thin stainless steel stencil is placed over the printed circuit board. With this stencil, FC’s technicians can apply solder paste to specific areas of the final printed circuit board where components are located. The solder paste itself consists of metal solder. The components of the solder are silver, copper, and tin, and the solder paste is mixed with flux. Within a professional PCBA line, the setup ensures that the PCB and solder stencil are in position and a technician applies the soldering paste to the desired areas in precise quantity.

Step 3: Component placement

The third step is to place the components on the PCB. Printed circuit boards are assembled using automated assembly processes, including wave soldering (primarily for through-hole components) and reflow soldering (for surface mount components). Each of these systems has requirements that PCB layout designers need to be aware of to ensure the highest possible manufacturing yields when the boards are in full production.

Reflow soldering

Reflow soldering involves heating the PCB assembly to a specific temperature that melts the solder paste and creates reliable electrical connections between the components and the PCB. The temperature and time of the reflow soldering must be controlled carefully, as too high or too low can damage the components or the PCB. This step ensures that the solder joints are formed properly and provide robust electrical connections.

Wave soldering

When we use THT technology to patch, we will use wave soldering. Wave soldering is to let the soldering surface of the plug-in board directly contact with the high temperature liquid tin to achieve the purpose of welding, the high temperature liquid tin to maintain a sloping surface, and by a special device to make the liquid tin to form a phenomenon similar to the wave, so called “wave soldering”, the main material is the solder bar.

Step 5: Inspection

After the reflow soldering or wave soldering, there is a chance that due to some erroneous movement in the PCB holding tray, the components got misaligned and may result in a short circuit or open connection. These flaws need to be identified, which is called inspection. Inspection can be manual and automated. Visual inspection, automated optical inspection(AOI), or X-ray inspection may be used to detect any defects or soldering issues, such as missing, misaligned, or damaged components, solder bridges, solder balls, cold solder joints, etc. Any identified defects are addressed and corrected at this stage.

Step 6: Cleaning

Once the inspection is complete, the PCB goes through a cleaning process to remove any residue or contaminants that may have accumulated during the assembly process, such as flux, solder, dust, and grease. Various cleaning methods, such as ultrasonic cleaning or aqueous cleaning, can be employed based on the specific requirements and the nature of the contaminants. The cleaning can also be done manually or automatically, using water, alcohol, or other solvents

In some cases, a conformal coating, such as acrylic, silicone, or epoxy is applied to the PCB assembly. The conformal coating can protect the PCBA from moisture, dust, corrosion, chemicals, temperature, etc. The coating is carefully applied to cover all the sensitive components and solder joints while allowing for necessary electrical connections.

Step 8: Quality control and testing

The Final step of PCB assembly is the functional test. This test verifies the proper working of PCB under normal conditions. In the assembly line, some testers provide power and signal through the PCB and monitor the PCB. The test fails if the tester finds any issues like unstable voltage or incorrect signals.
