Different Types of Rigid PCB

Each printed circuit board contains four layers: a silkscreen layer, a solder mask layer, a copper layer, and a substrate layer. According to the nature of the PCB substrate, PCB can generally be divided into single-sided rigid PCB, double-sided rigid PCB, and multilayer rigid PCB.

Single-Sided Rigid PCB

A single-sided Rigid PCB is the most common type of printed circuit board. It features metal traces on a single side of the dielectric. Single-sided rigid PCBs are widely popular with rapid production due to their manufacturability and simple design.

Double-Sided PCB

A double-sided rigid PCB is added to a thin layer of conducting material on both the top and bottom sides of the board. It has become an industry staple.

Multilayer Rigid PCB

Multilayer PCBs have more than two copper layers. Generally, any board featuring at least three conductive layers is included in this category. Multilayer PCBs are designed in a ‘sandwich’ fashion, with several double-sided conductive layers divided by an equal number of insulating material sheets. All of these must be bonded and laminated under high pressures and temperatures to ensure no air gaps exist and that the final PCB assembly is properly stable.

Rigid PCB Fabrication & Assembly Process at FC

Step One: Rigid PCB Design and Layout

Rigid PCB starts with PCB design and layout. This involves creating a schematic diagram of the circuit and then designing the physical layout of the PCB. Design considerations range from PCB size, number of layers, and precise component placement.

Step Two: Rigid PCB Manufacturing

After the Rigid PCB design and layout, the next step is Rigid PCB manufacturing. This contains etching, drilling, plating, solder mask, and silkscreen. The board can then make the necessary connections between the layers.

Etching

Etching means removing excess copper from circuit boards and making the needed electronic parts visible.

Drilling

Rigid PCB drilling is the process of creating holes (or slots) in a bare printed circuit board. It is used to mount components on the PCB board or to connect the board to other boards or devices.

Plating

This is a process in which metal is plated on the entire hole wall. A conductive pattern between the inner and outer layers of a double-sided rigid printed circuit board then enables electrical interconnection.

Solder Mask And Silkscreen

Solder masks are used to protect small electrical lines and facilitate their placement. Screen printing applies to solder mask printing and symbol printing.

Surface Finish

Due to their excellent electrical properties, Hot Air Solder Leveling (HASL), ENIG and OSP are the most common finishes for rigid PCB boards.

Milling

 The CNC machine routes the PCB circuit contour according to the PCB board contour gerber.

Test

Open/Short circuit testing is done to ensure the quality of rigid PCBs. Generally, samples and small quantities of rigid PCBs are tested using flying probes. Rigid PCBs for mass production are tested with a test tool.

Step Three: Component placement

This step will put the components on the board and solder into place. The components are securely attached to the board using surface mount or through-hole soldering techniques.

Step Four: Quality Control and Testing

To ensure the proper functioning of rigid PCBs, they must be tested and inspected after installation. We will use specialized testing equipment to do this.
